Exercise on Question Tags

Complete the sentences with the correct question tags
  1. Mr McGuinness is from Ireland, ……….. ?
·         Mr McGuinness is from Ireland, isn't he ?
·         The main clause is positive, so the question must be negative. Mr (mister) used for a man, so we use the pronoun ‘he’

·         The main clause is negative, so the question tag must be positive. Use the pronoun ‘it’ for ‘car’
  1. You are John, ………. ?
·         You are John, aren't you ?
·         The main clause is positive, so the question must be negative. Talking to John directly, we use the pronoun ‘you’
  1. She went to the library yesterday, ………. ?
·         She went to the library yesterday, didn't she ?
·         The main clause is positive, so the question must be negative. Note that the sentences is in past tense, so we use the auxiliary ‘did’
  1. He didn't recognize me, ………. ?
·         He didn't recognize me, did he ?
·         The main clause is negative, so the question tag must be positive. Note that the sentences is in past tense, so we use the auxiliary ‘did’
  1. Cars pollute the environment, ……… ?
·         Cars pollute the environment, don't they ?
·         The main clause is positive, so the question must be negative. Note that we use the auxiliary ‘do’ when the main verb is not a form of ‘to be’ and no other auxiliary is given.
  1. Mr. Pritchard has been to Scotland recently, ………. ?
·         Mr. Pritchard has been to Scotland recently, hasn't he ?
·         The main clause is positive, so the question must be negative. In present perfect tense the auxiliary is ‘have/has’. Use the given auxiliary.

·         The main clause is positive, so the question must be negative. Use the pronoun ‘it’ for ‘trip’
  1. He won't tell her, ……… ?
·         He won't tell her, will he ?
·         The main clause is negative, so the question tag must be positive. In future tense, the auxiliary is ‘will’. Use the given auxiliary. Note that in negative sentences ‘will not’ is shortened to won’t’
  1. Hugh had a red car, ………. ?
·         Hugh had a red car, didn't he ?
·         The main clause is positive, so the question must be negative. Note that the sentences is in past tense, so we use the auxiliary ‘did’
