Passive and Active Voice

Exercise on Passive Voice
Write passive sentences in Simple Present
1.       The documents / print
  • The documents are printed
  • Subject +  is / are + past participle. Plural that’s why we use ‘are’. Past Participle of regular verb just add ‘ed’.
2.       The food / eat / not
  • The food is not eaten
  • Subject +  is / are + not + past participle. Singular that’s why we use ‘is’. Past Participle of iregular verb : 3rd column of irreg verb.
3.       the litter / throw away
  • The litter is thrown away.
  • Subject +  is / are +  past participle. Singular that’s why we use ‘is’. Past Participle of iregular verb : 3rd column of irreg verb.

4.       The lights / switch on
  • The lights were switched on
  • Subject +  was / were  + past participle. Plural that’s why we use ‘were’. Past Participle of regular verb just add ‘ed’.
5.       This computer / sell / not
  • This computer was not sold
  • Subject +  was / were  + not + past participle. Singular that’s why we use ‘was’. Past Participle of iregular verb : 3rd column of irreg verb.
6.       The children / pick up / not
  • The children were not picked up
  • Subject +  was / were  + not + past participle. Plural that’s why we use ‘were’. Past Participle of regular verb just add ‘ed’.
Write passive sentences in Present Perfect.
7.       The postcard / send
  • The postcard has been sent
  • Subject +  have / has + been + past participle. Singular that’s why we use ‘has’. Past Participle of iregular verb : 3rd column of irreg verb.
8.       The pencils / count
  • The pencils have been counted
  • Subject +  have / has + been + past participle. Plural that’s why we use ‘have’. Past Participle of regular verb just add ‘ed’.
9.       The room / book / not
  • The room has not been booked
  • Subject +  have / has + not + been + past participle. Singular that’s why we use ‘has’. Past Participle of regular verb just add ‘ed’.
10.    The people / inform / not
  • The people have not been informed.
  • Subject +  have / has + not + been + past participle. Plural that’s why we use ‘have’. Past Participle of regular verb just add ‘ed’.


Exercise on Active Voice
Rewrite the sentences in Active voice – present perfect
1.       The bill has been paid by Kerrie
  • Kerrie has paid the bill
  • Subject +  has / have + past participle. Singular that’s why we use ‘has’. Past Participle of iregular verb : 3rd column of irreg verb.
2.       Five miles have been cycled by us
  • We have cycled five miles
  • Subject +  has / have + past participle. Plural that’s why we use ‘have’. Past Participle of regular verb just add ‘ed’.
3.       The thieves have not been caught by them
  • They have not caught the thieves
  • Subject +  has / have + past participle. Plural that’s why we use ‘have’. Past Participle of iregular verb : 3rd column of irreg verb.
